WHY PORTUGAL?

WHY PORTUGAL?

The climate in Portugal is characterised as moderate maritime, which means that warm summers and mild winters await us. The best time to visit Portugal is between March and November, but it is really worth it to visit Portugal all year round. The warmest months are July and August. Portugal’s north and south vary a little in the weather, as the weather around Porto is cooler and more humid than in the south. Therefore, the summer is particularly warm in the north, but the winter is rather cool to mild and with more rain. The south of Portugal, on the other hand – and especially the Algarve – enjoys a Mediterranean climate. It is not uncommon for temperatures to climb to over 30 degrees in summer.

The coast of Portugal offers top class surfing spots. No wonder that the World Surf League ( host of the World Surfing Championships) makes a tour stop here and holds several qualification events. Portugal also has the only surfing reserve in Europe. In 2011, the area around Ericeira has been awarded the title of “World Surfing Reserve” by the WSR for reasons such as wave quality, strong surfing culture and community, ecological features and rich biodiversity. This title not only gives the area the necessary recognition, but also places the environment under special protection, so that in the future it will continue to be possible to surf in an amazing natural environment. In addition, other renowned surf spots such as Ribeira D’Ilhas or the Big Wave Spot in Nazaré attract surfers and surfing fans from all over the world.

The easiest way to get there is by plane. Porto is your destination airport if you want to visit our Surfcamps in northern Portugal, Esmoriz and Porto. Lisbon airport should be your destination if you’re going to visit our Surfcamps Ericeira, Santa Cruz, Sintra and Caparica. The best way to get to the south is via Faro airport. From here you can quickly reach the surf camps Lagos and Luz.

Apart from an extremely good surf, Portugal offers many places worth seeing with typical flair and plenty of other activities. We recommend city trips to Porto and Lisbon, cultural excursions to Obidos and Sintra, and other sports activities such as mountain biking, paragliding, climbing and kayaking. Portugal also stands out for its rich cuisine, with an impressive range of restaurants and dishes, such as the traditional stuffed puff pastry Pastel de Nata, which is a must try.
