Our family surf camp in the Algarve is located in the south of Portugal, about 80 km west of the closest airport in Faro. On both the south and west coast, a variety of surf spots for all levels are waiting for you. Depending on wind and wave conditions, there will always be at least one spot which is delivering good waves to surf. Whether in the charming village of Luz, about 7 km from Praia da Luz, or directly in Lagos - the Family Camp offers a family atmosphere, a wide range of sports activities and comfortable accommodation in the lovingly designed apartments.

FAQ

Are bed linen provided?

Yes, you can save the space in your luggage for more important things. But please bring a beach towel.

Do I need a car?

Not necessarily! We take care of the transport to the surf spots and occasionally offer a shuttle to the city. However, it is recommended to rent a car in order to be more flexible if you want to explore the Algarve on your own.

What should I/my child wear under the wetsuit?

A short swimming trunks for the boys and a bikini for the girls should be enough. If you or your child is sensitive to salt and/or sand, an additional lycra shirt (rash guard) would protect the neck and throat.

ACCOMMODATION

The family surf camp offers two houses. The house in Luz consists of 8 apartments and the one in Lagos of 4. The apartments have a fully equipped kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a private bathroom and offer accommodation for 2 to 6 guests. Each apartment has either a balcony or a terrace. The large garden offers next to a small playground with a swing, a ping-pong table and a seesaw (both only in Luz) enough space to play hide and seek for the children. Furthermore you will find a swimming pool, a BBQ area and a sun terrace.

T1 Apartment

The T1 apartment is ideal for small families or couples. In addition to a fully equipped kitchen, living room with TV and private bathroom, the apartment has a separate bedroom with queen-size bed (in Luz) or double bed (in Lagos). A baby bed can be placed there as well. There is a table and chairs for dining outside on the terrace or balcony.
In Luz you will also find two small beds (75x180cm) in the living room, which allows accommodation for up to 4 people.

T2 Apartment

The T2 apartment is ideal for larger families. Apart from the fully equipped kitchen, a living room with TV and private bathroom, each apartment has a bedroom with queen-size bed (in Luz) or double bed (in Lagos) and a bedroom with 2 single beds. A table and chairs are available on the terrace or balcony for dining outside.
In Luz there are also two small beds (75x180cm) in the living room, allowing accommodation for up to 6 people.

SURF

In our surf camp everything is about the surf course! It is perfect for beginners as well as for advanced surfers. We also offer special kids/family courses.

We make sure that the lessons take place when the surfing conditions are most suitable for your skills and always adjust your lessons time to swell, wind and tides.
In the adult classes (12 years and older) you will be taught by our instructors for 3-4 hours a day at a surf spot that matches your skills, such as Cordoama, Amado or one of the many spots on the south coast. Course days can be booked individually.
Our surf coaches are at home here on the south coast, so they know the surrounding surf spots very well. All surf instructors have an ISA, BSA, FPS (at least level 1) or an equivalent license, which also includes lifeguard and didactic training. Besides the certification all surf instructors have many years of experience in teaching and surfing.
To be able to offer an intensive and closely supervised surf course, surf groups consist of a maximum of 8 people. The lessons include theory and practice units as well as video analysis.

Our mission is to bring your surfing skills to the next level and to make your surfing holiday unforgettable.

Kids & Family surf school

The kids and family surf school lessons take place from Monday to Saturday and are directed at children between 6-11 years old and their parents who want to attend a class together. You will be taught by our surf instructors at a suitable surf spot, such as Zavial, Castelejo or Meia Praia.

To be able to offer an intensive and closely supervised surf course, each group consists of max. 4 children + parents and is supported by our nanny service. The surf trip usually lasts between 3-4 hours, with 2 hours "water time".

Beginner lessons

If you want to try surfing for the first time or if you want to get a feeling for the surfboard and the ocean after a long time, the beginner course is the right choice for you. Our instructors will help you to master the first manoeuvres, such as the take-off and easy turns.

Our mission is to encourage and challenge you in such a way that the fun of surfing is always in the foreground. You will be taught on softboards which size is adapted to your height and weight. In addition, you will learn about waves and surf equipment in theory, so that you are well prepared to go surfing independently after the surf lessons.

Intermediate lessons

You have already participated in a surfing-classes? Then the intermediate surf course is the right one for you. Depending on your level of knowledge and skills, our surf instructors will work with you on your surfing style and help you improve your surfing maneuvers.

The aim is to help you to find your way around the line up and in green waves and to make sure you can make safe bottom and top turns in green waves. We will also work on you being able to surf the wave parallel after the turns. In accompanying theory units you will be taught important surfing maneuvers, which you can later put into practice in the water.

Guiding

You are an experienced surfer and confident in the ocean with your own equipment? Then surf guiding is the right choice for you. Our guide knows the coast like the back of his hand and will take you to the best spots twice a day. There you will get an introduction about what makes this surf spot special and what you have to pay attention to.

Afterwards you will have 90 minutes to enjoy the waves before returning to the camp.

OUR TEAM

Urs, the surf instructor and camp manager of Vale do Mar Haus in Lagos is from Switzerland. He learned to surf in France in 1996 and also worked as a camp manager there. After that he has already run surf camps in Morocco and Bali. Since 2017 he is in charge of the house in Lagos with his wife Iris and their daughter Joana. Here you can find good surfing all year round! He is looking forward to welcoming you and showing you the region and the Portuguese lifestyle.

Our surf coach Jesse is from Germany. He has been surfing since 2009 and has been teaching family courses for children here in the surf camp since 2017. He is happy to share his passion for surfing with you.

Nora, our surf coach, is from Germany. She has been surfing since 2012 and has been teaching family courses for children here at the surf camp since 2017. So far she has fascinated every child with surfing.

Toto, the owner and camp manager in Luz, is from Germany. He started surfing before 1998. Since 2004 he has been a surf instructor and in 2015 he opened the camp in Luz. The best surfer for him is the one who has the most fun.
